Hartzell V. Schaff, M.D. is the Stuart W. Harrington Professor of Surgery at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota. He received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine and completed surgical training at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Schaff has authored or co-authored over 850 papers, 95 book chapters, and edited or written 9 textbooks. He has served or is serving on the editorial boards of 11 journals including Circulation and the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery for which he is Associate Editor. Dr. Schaff has received many prestigious awards including Fulbright Visiting Professorship 1986, Teacher of the Year (surgery) 1998, the Distinguished Clinician Award at Mayo Clinic 2007, the Surgery Mentoring Award from the American Heart Association 2010, and named the 2011 William W.L. Glenn Lecturer. Dr. Schaff has been chair of the surgical council of the American Heart Association, and more recently, was president of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (2012-2013).
